Vilcabamba's ChurchYou may know the Vilcabamba Valley as ‘The Valley of Longevity’. Every day we luxuriate in perfect weather. We breath clean mountain air and enjoy the local mineralized water which is also extremely healthy. Ecuadorean people are friendly, relaxed, yet extremely hard-working. We walk the streets at night with no worries. Everywhere we look, there is unparalleled beauty with skies where you never see an airplane or helicopter.

The weather in Vilcabamba is perfect. Being on the equator, there is barely any seasonal variation. Moisture from the Amazon is captured behind nearby mountains in the clouds, so there is very little rain and the humidity level is perfect. The strength of the sun is moderated by scattered cloud cover. In the ‘rainy season’, there are occasional drizzles, along with extremely rare, very short, downpours. In July and August there is a little more wind, but nothing unacceptable. At all times, the temperature is between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius. Even at night. No homes have air conditioning or heating. You can always leave your windows open so you can hear the birds. Having to wear a light jacket is a relative calamity for the locals.
There is no crime. Rumours you hear in the bars or see on the internet are not backed up by fact, or refer to rare incidents that occurred many years ago and repeated ‘ad nauseum’ with slight variations. Any crime is personal, not random. A check at the local police station will confirm that most ‘incidents’ have never been reported to them. Policeman are bored silly. Ambitious ones beg to leave within weeks.
